Irritable Bowel Syndrome

February 21, 2018

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), sometimes also called Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), is the most common functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder. In fact, studies estimate that 38-96 million Americans suffer from IBS, although only 5 to 7% have been diagnosed. Symptoms of IBS include frequent diarrhea, constipation—or both—gas, bloating, and abdominal pain.

IBS/IBD is a group of symptoms, including abdominal pain or discomfort and changes in bowel movement patterns. Doctors call IBS a “functional gastrointestinal disorder.” This means that the GI tract doesn’t function properly, but does not show any physical damage.

So, what exactly are the underlying causes of IBS? The answer depends on the individual. Because IBS is not a single disease with a single cause, but rather, a complex collection of symptoms, it has several possible causes. And, while it isn’t officially classified as an autoimmune disease, it shares some of the same risk factors of autoimmunity, including intestinal permeability (sometimes called leaky gut), dietary factors, toxins, infections, and stress, as well as an underlying inflammatory condition.

Too many IBS/IBD sufferers are prescribed anti-inflammatory and steroidal medications for their symptoms instead of looking for the root cause of the inflammation in the first place. Functional Medicine has the tools to uncover probable root causes of your symptoms.

At Rising Health we take a multi-pronged, holistic approach, a combination of medical and lifestyle considerations, to address your gastrointestinal condition. Testing and treating for intestinal permeability, food intolerances, SIBO, parasites, yeasts and immune system imbalances are all necessary to truly heal patients with IBS/IBD symptoms. We help you change your relationship to food, make necessary adjustments to exercise, sleeping and stress reduction, all things that influence  the health of your gut. Lifestyle changes work in unison with our medical solutions to provide lifelong relief.
