Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an innovative medical therapy that restores oxygen to deprived blood and tissue, treating a variety of illnesses here in the Salt Lake region

Bodily wounds and damaged blood vessels can cause fluids to escape into surrounding cell tissue. This causes swelling and inflammation. These damaged cells are stripped of needed oxygen and eventually die. By introducing elevated levels of oxygen, HBOT relieves swelling and provides the necessary oxygen levels for cells to function properly.

Elevated oxygen levels strengthen bodily tissue against further infections, boosting the white blood cells’ abilities to defend the body. HBOT also improves the body’s collagen levels by promoting new blood cell growth, which brings healing endothelial cells.

Do I need Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

HBOT is perhaps most often associated with treating carbon monoxide poisoning, but the treatment is reported to be effective in a variety of applications.

This restorative oxygen therapy provides relief and healing from surface-level injuries such as blunt-force trauma, skin grafts, and necrotizing soft tissue infections. The elevated oxygen levels promote cell healing and restoration, leaving cell tissue better off than before the injury. HBOT is also used to treat cells damaged by carbon monoxide, cyanide, radiation, and accumulated-gas infections such as gangrene or decompression sickness.

Finally, HBOT treats and rehabilitates deeper bodily infections, addressing deficient blood levels, osteomyelitis bone infections, and the chronic infection called actinomycosis.

What happens during Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

When HBOT patients come in for treatment, they will enter a single or multi-person chamber to breathe pure oxygen with elevated levels of air pressure. They will sit in a comfortable position for up to two hours as they breathe in pure oxygen.  Elevated pressure levels may cause patients to experience “ear-popping,” which can be relieved quickly by swallowing or chewing. After a session, a patient may experience lightheadedness or headaches as the body adjusts back to normal oxygen levels.

It’s important to note that HBOT is not safe for every patient. Elevated oxygen levels and air pressure directly affect the body’s lungs and ears; individuals with related health concerns should not receive oxygen therapy. HBOT may damage the middle ear, eyes, and sinuses. Oxygen poisoning is also possible but rare. Consult medical professionals, such as the team here at Rising Health, to determine if HBOT is right for you.
